Thoughts on Birdfeeder Position

Posted: 23 Feb 2009 09:19:05

Hello everyone :)

As you probably already know the webcam has been moved to the original position ready for the arrival of some sheep and lambs (likely April time) and hopefully some nice sunsets. There was nothing of interest in the previous angle as the sheep from the far field have been moved elsewhere.

We moved the sign and the birdfeeder to the new location but as you can see the bird feeder isn't that easy to see (at least the birds on it are a bit small). If anyone has any thoughts as to where we can put the bird feeder for a better view or what we can do then please feel free to let us know here or via email.

The sky is another issue in this position in that it throws off the colour of the land when it gets too bright. I am taking some steps to fix this and a bit of luck this shouldn't be an issue after I have put some slightly tinted celophane over the sky area to act in the same way as a graduated neutral density filter would in photography :)

But please post your thoughts on the birdfeeder (even if you think it is OK where it is!)

Hi Dan,

I was thinking as the birdfeeder comes in bits would it be possible to take one part out and move it to the right a bit.  Or would changing the height upset the birds?

Thanks

Hi Dan,

I was thinking the same as Fi... take the middle bit of the pole out, that's if the top bit will fit into the bottom bit and then bring the feeder nearer the webcam with the hope that the sheep, when they arrive back in the field, don't nose the holders off their hooks.. :)

With the birdfeeder in its new position it is nice to see the hens and blackbird feeding on the ground under the feeder. I agree the feeder should be a little lower - perhaps it will be possible to push it down further into the soil. The new position shows us a lot more of the surrounding countryside - a nice change of view until the lambs arrive.

Hi all!

I personally love the new perspective. You see see a lot of the field and I look forward to seeing some lambs in the near future :) I always found the birdfeeder took up too much of the webcam which meant less of the field. But that is just my oppinion.

I'll love whatever you do to the view :)

I think if the middle section is taken out of the feeder , it will probably be too low for the birds and will probably attract unwanted visitors and the birds may be too wary to use it......... ?

I am afraid it is impossible to take the middle section out as the ends of the end bits do not link together. They need the middle bit to fit together. Like you say, if it gets too low the birds won't go on it. Perhaps it might be an idea to use an alternative stand for the feeders...... a make shift one, or raise the camera up a bit.... Hmm, if we had a taller pole we could stick the webcam higher up which i think will solve several problems... the bird feeder, the light distortion and... something else I cant think of now. Raising the webcam up will also result in more field being viewable. Perhaps this is what needs thinking about... Does anyone have a really long fencing post? :P

Keep the new birdfeeder for the winter months (it could be put in the farm's garden for Lynda and the family to enjoy the birds) and use a makeshift pole as we had before.  It is nice to see the birds close-up.

One more thing I forgot to add on my previous message was that, with the webcam at the height it is now, we can see the hens and eventually the sheep and lambs close-up as well as any wildlife which might wander in front of the cam.

I have managed to get hold of a decent length of post on which to secure the webcam. I have not yet erected it but with a bit of luck it should give us a lot more flexibility with birdfeeder position and clearer colours on the stream without compromising any view of the field itself..... A perfect solution? Here is how I hope it will work.....

I was just wondering - we see no sheep for some months during winter. Of course, the ewes have to go in the barn to be slimmed/fattened before breeding and the lambs have to go in the barn for protection when they are too small to brave the elements. Would it be feasible to put the cam in the barn (the hencam is inside) for that time? We would love to see the babies while they are tiny and the cam must surely be happier indoors? There may be a good reason why this can't be done but I was just wondering.

Hi maria :) It would be great to get the webcam in the barn but it is simply down to a lack of cable length. We would need considerable length of cable to get the webcam to the barn so it is just unfeasable I am afraid. We have recently got a couple of really tall poles which might make it feasable to have a greater range of angles when the lambing season starts but we will just have to see.
