Old Laptops / PCs wanted!

Hi everyone,

It looks as though the broadcasting PC has been critically injured by the thunderstorm last week. It just keeps rebooting randomly which is a typical symptom of bad memory.

The thunderstorm took out the network card in the PC and I thought that the damage was limited to that. But over the past few days, after getting a fresh network card, the computer has restarted with a critical crash nearly a dozen times.

Obviously this isn't a sustainable situation and so I am making a plea to anybody who may have an old unused laptop or PC that they no longer need / or may even think is broken(!) which you may be willing to donate to us to use as the LambWatch HQ broadcasting computer.

It doesn't have to be a modern computer, in fact it doesn't take much at all to broadcast to the internet.

One requirement is that it needs to be as quiet as possible when switched on :)

So if you have a dusty old laptop or a dusty old PC that you would like to see rehomed to a good home and help broadcast the LambWatch stream to the world, please do get in touch!

Thanks to those who have responded to me on this.

In the end it made most sense to purchase a new netbook for the broadcasting which came to GBP161.00 and then a weekend of intense frustration trying to get it working to replace the old PC which is now being tested.

Due to changes at the farm there is an additional need to relocate the webcam (not done yet as just not enough hours) but I have also purchased a wireless webcam which should provide more flexibility when it comes to rehoming the webcam; the intention being that the new HQ of the webcam will be the extension rather than the farm house and the HQ will also be less intrusive to the occupier; with fewer wires everywhere. The new PC is also more efficient with electricity so that should ease pressures on the electricity bill and the new wireless webcam (not yet setup) has sound and vision combined so that will reduce the number of powered appliances used to run the webcam.

If anybody wishes to contribute to the expenses of running this webcam and to the new required hardware, then please feel free to contribute using the donation buttons at the top of the screen. Ignoring time and electricity bills, the new powering PC came to 161 and the new webcam came to 74 GBP all of which of course I am happy to burden myself but should anybody wish to contribute that would be very kind and greatly appreciated.
