What many people do not realise is that the wool market is depressed and has been for some years, as the use of synthetic fabrics has taken over. Very, very little money is paid for a sheep's fleece, and one would have to have a very large flock to be able to to shear and bring in enough money to support and manage a sheep farm. It would simply not be possible for Marlfield Farm to continue to exist without raising lambs to send to market. There may be no market for wool at the moment, but there appears to be one for lamb. That's just the economic truth of the matter, whether it offends our sensibilities or not. People simply have to make a living. And the lambs themselves could not be clipped for a whole year, so how would a farmer be able to purchase the services of veterinarians, or pay the cost of medicines, or hire shearers, or do all the other things that have to be done on a farm, never mind the cost of living for the farmer and his family.?
Idealism is all well and good, but it does not pay the bills. Let us live and let live, each according to his or her own philosophy and perspective on life on this, our home, our planet Earth.
