some of you may already know that there has been a new microphone installed this Christmas and it was weatherproofed using a co-op table salt container, disected and inverted :)

As a result the sound is a bit hollow. Are there any sound experts out there who can suggest some tips to make it sound perhaps a bit less like being stuck in a sea shell? :)

I guess i could stick some soft material inside the case so there is less echoing but i thought i would post in case some of our lambwatchers are experts in the field of sound :)

Have you thought of taping a plastic bag over the end of the container and putting holes in the bag...

I'll ask my brother tomorrow. He has a recording studio and he might have a few suggestions. :)

We would line the inside with egg cartons, to stop feedback.

I think the seashell effect just adds to the mysteriousness of being able to sit here on top of a snow bank in Canada and watch a bird-feeder on a little sheep farm 5000 miles away.   Amazing!

Thanks for the feedback everybody. Apparently natural fibres are a good buffer. In particular sheeps wool! I will try sticking in some cotton wool buds, are they natural wool? Probably not. But sheeps wool is stinky and oily so dont fancy hunting around for that :)

I found this link about cotton wool

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-cotton-wool.htm

You could always use an old, clean woollen sock if there are any which are finished with. :)

Dan,

You could always get your Mum or Dad  to just clip some wool off one of the sheep..And wash it with a drop of washing up liquid then just leave to dry naturally...

I did that with the lambs tail you gave me on the first time I visit to the farm...

Cotton swabs, otherwise known as cotton wool "buds" - are made of cotton fibers.  But you can buy cotton wool "batting" at a chemist's -  a little of that should work fine.

How about stuffing it with Ludvig von earwig? Just kidding—I like him a lot. Tricia, what did your brother say?
