Feel free to ask any questions about the building work at the farm on this forum thread! For an introduction, there is a news post which details what's been going on recently at the farm:

In Other News.... Extension!

Sorry,  I put a question on the News thread instead of this one.  I was wondering what those interesting spaces were under the heading 'Excavation Work'

Hiya Margaret - don't worry about posting a question there :) I just thought it would be easier to answer them here - there is more room :)

Mum will be able to give you a better explanation of those little discoveries under Excavation than I will and I am sure when she sees your question she will be happy to explain!

We made all sorts of very interesting discoveries as you can imagine. The " stable " had been here for 300 years at least and when Howard was young and before the days of tractors , he can remember the horse being kept in there... the horse that did all the work that the tractor does today. The "archway" we think was some sort of air raid tunnel.....

Oooh this sounds exciting.  All we found were old apothecary bottles and broken pottery fragments (well, the builders found them whilst digging to lay the the foundations of the extension). Nothing historically significant or valuable. Please keep us updated.

This is just the most exciting thing, this building - first the section which dates back to Elizabeth the first, and then the addition in the early 1700s, and now a new addition in  the reign of Elizabeth the second !  The same beautiful Yorkshire hills looking down on a little farm that has seen such historic changes in who-know-how-many generations of farmers who have lived and worked there at Marlfield Farm.

And modern conveniences, too!  A dependable water supply!  How much those older generations must have longed for something like that.

I was fascinated by the vaulted underground area, especially as the stone work was so meticulous in the archway, and someone could weave a tale of romance and intrigue about a discovery like that, but I guess the air raid shelter makes the most sense.

Please keep us posted with updates and photos as the work progresses.  I wonder what the sheep think of it all?

Helen.... the sheep seem completely oblivious of all the activity... water off a "sheeps" back. ...the hens, however are just loving it, especially when the jcb is digging ! It has been turning the ground over and they have been in amongst the caterpillar tracks grabbing all manner of juicy titbits, even to the point of nearly getting squashed themselves. They just nip out at the last minute before they get run over    :PYou will have seen them on the photos that Dan has posted....... in amongst the action !!

I will take another look!   Some day those free-range hens are going to range themselves right out of existence if they are't careful.

Hi Sue... the extension will be a kitchen/living room and upstairs is a bedroom and a bathroom.... just right for Howard and I.... nice and cosy and there is an inside connecting door from the downstairs directly into the main farmhouse   :)
