He's Back!!!

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 00:29:28

For those who have missed him, and those who have wondered if he might return, there are legs hanging down over the lens of the camera at night, and an antenna that waves to the night sky.

Herr Ludvig von Earvig, the Only Lonely Earwig of Earby, has made his return for 2010.  There is a poem in his honour buried somewhere in the Forum topics.

                                                   I saw him , I did !

though he thought he was hid,

neath the glow of the infra red light.

                                                   He was dangling his shoes,

                                                   cause he knows they amuse.

While he washes his socks in the night !

If the truth to be told...he can be rather bold

he thinks he belongs on the cam.

In his own little mind,  The Celebrity kind,

whilst he spins off some earwiggy spam.

Oh, wonderfully clever you!!  I knew you'd be glad to see him - the others are all asleep when he makes his appearance.  He doesn't know he is being watched and described from five thousand miles away.  If only he knew what a celebrity he is, he'd wash his socks more often and do little dances in his bare feet.  I'm sure he'll appear more often now - or this might be his son or daughter, keeping up the tradition. Yes , I saw it some nights before, coming slowly into the len frame,  nice antennas and legs.   I loved it.

It is another watcher, though not from the right side of the len.  A watched watcher.  I accepted it to our community.

I think some of the birds will accept it too, if they notice it.

Till then,  it would make us some music by its leg and wing,   wouldn't it ?

Welcome Mr. Ludvig the Earwig. Spend your time well

but take care, not on the feeder !

No, I don't think he likes nuts and seeds.  We're not sure what his diet is.  About the music, well, with a name like Ludvig, he should be able to make some.

Herr Ludvig von Earvig is back again.  I saw him tonight at about 22.14 (14th August 2011)

Well, it's about this time of year when we begin to see and hear the young owls as they are sent out to lead their own lives (and don't go without complaining!)  So keep an eye on the cam about ten pm, EDT or, if you Brits are adventuresome, get up around 3.00 a.m. and check it out.  One of these nights we will get lucky.

I haven't seen Herr Ludwig von Earwig yet, but I'm sure he will show up on my computer soon.

What does a "Ludvig" eat I hear some people ask? Well, to start with he likes most kinds of decaying organic matter. Next on his list of favourites are tender shoots, leaves and the blossoms of flowering plants and vegetables. These redish-brown creepies, with a scary looking pair of nippers up front, cause  no damage to humans execpt for a small non poisonous nip. Some spiders give a worse bite than our wandering earwig who is only looking for a nice dark damp place to o'night. These little guys are also carniverous, eating a variety of other garden pests including insect larvae, slug eggs, and aphids. So the question is, to squish or not to squish?  Are the good things done by "Von Ludvig" outweighed by the damage he does? Just ask a championship rose grower!

Simon, you forgot to add webcam wires to the menu ;) Although I dont think he reaalllly likes the wires... I think he enjoys the warmth from the infra red and also the dampess of it being against a "dry" stone wall and fence post :)

I'm sure that Ludwig has a purpose on the planet, and I'm glad he helps keep your bugs in check, Simnon, so that your roses are given a chance to be even more beautiful, but Ludwig has no sense of when he is more like a door than a window.  He does get in the way!

On the other hand, perhaps he knows how to help the poor ailing computer these days?

I'm waiting for the owls!!  To see one on the sign at night is a real treat.

Sorry Dan, I forgot to mention nice chewy sound and video cables. Such a feast! This is also a very classy bug having central heating in his favourite hiding place. Hi Helen, I do not wish to imply that I grow roses. My balcony faces the wrong direction and trees shade the area for most of the day. Get a little sun late in day and can only grow plants that tolerate lower light conditions. My Geraniums do flower occasionly but are tall and spindly because of lack of good sunlight. So, no roses!

Ah, Simon, what a shame!  My balcony faces northeast, and  while I don't grow roses, I do have luck with other flowers and some herbs.   The Clematis you see in this avatar is from my balcony, but I am nine storeys up and there are no trees up here to block the sunlight.
