Fourth of July Weekend

Posted: 02 Jul 2010 22:07:21

Greetings to all of our USA Lambwatchers as they celebrate their Glorious Fourth on Sunday.  May it be a weekend of fun, family, fireworks and safe travels.  I think, by my calculations, that the USA is 234 years old this year.  From the viewpoint of all you Brits, that's not very old. but democracies rise and fall very quickly, and that one has stood the test of time.

Wave that Flag, ring that LIberty Bell, and enjoy every minute of your national holiday.  I hope there is a broadcast of the concert from the Washington Mall - it's always worth watching.

And I haven't been able to copy a Stars and Stripes into this message, so just use your imagination.

Best wishes from your neighbor (note the spelling) up north                                                                          Helen

A Very Happy Fourth of July to all our American Lambwatchers

Have a wonderful weekend of celebrations

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Thanks, Margaret, for including that anthem!  That's the official one, of course, and the one we're familiar with.  The unofficial one is "America the Beautiful".

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

Independence Day

Posted: 04 Jul 2010 12:46:28

People who live on the other side of the "pond" dn't understand what a significant day this is for all of North America - for those who chose to leave the British Empire, and those who chose to stay. It has shaped our history, our politics, our culture, and our friendships for over two hundred years, and marked a turning point in the lives of the whole contient, and to some extent, to the world.  Happy Day, Yankee Friends.

Thank you for your greetings! Our celebration was quiet at our home, trying to keep cool. Fireworks were throughout the weekend, depending on the community.

Helen, I like to watch the celebration from Boston with the Boston Pops concert then fireworks at the Boston River. And Margaret and Helen, thank you both for the national anthem (official and unofficial).

Ah, Mike, if only independence could have been as easy as "over a piece of cake and a cup of tea." I guess that would go for world events today. Cake and tea are much more civilized than guns and wars.

To all of us, may we enjoy the freedoms that we have and appreciate the sacrifices that all before us have made.
