Hello Dan. The summer past you said you had to put your hay up while it was wet. Did you ever try putting rock salt on it? We have done that and it works very well. TC scooner

Hi, Scooner,
When I read the title of this, I thought you might be asking if a salt block would be put out for the sheep, the way we do for deer over here. Id' be interested in knowing if that is done for sheep.

Last June Dan said the rain had spoiled there hay crop. In the past when we have had to put hay when it was to green, or wet we would broadcst rock salt over the bales. This keeps the hay from spoiling,or even prvents spontanious combustion from occuring. Which of course will leave your hay stack a pile of ashes lol. An add bonus. The livestock love the salted hay. Just a little tid bit from Utah!!

Salted hay! Now that sounds like a real delicacy, if one is a sheep!

Hi Scooner - thanks for the idea. We didn't put rock salt on last year's crop . It surely must affect the taste of the hay? And would all that salt be bad for the animals if they were to eat it all? It does make sense that it should dry out the hay though.
Is it quite commonplace for salt to be put on wet crops ? The reason I ask is that it's the first time I have ever really heard of it but it does make sense :)

Hello Dan, We fed our sheep salted hay. However you broadcast it like you would chicken feed. Maybe a wee bit more. I hope this serves you well in the future.

Dan I dont know about other crops. I learned about this years ago, on hay. The purpose was to prevent spontanious combustion. As a bonus the animals ate it up lol, as well the hay stacks were kept from being reduced to smoldering piles of ashes.

Please forgive me. on repeating my self. I mean about the spontainious combustion. Bad enough in conversation, but while writing!! You will think I am daft. Merry Christmas Steven Clyde Coon "scooner"
