Poets' Corner

Posted: 13 Jul 2009 18:45

A poem for this week ( but do bear in mind they were written for children)

Hoomski the Hoomi

Hoomski was the Hoomi of a far and distant land

He sure was lonely with no family to hand

He wanted a wife that would be just right

But he couldn't think who, though he pondered day and night.

A prince has his princess with long, blonde hair

A knight goes a-courting for a damsel fair

An emperor has an empress, a tsarina has her tsar

But for someone for a Hoomi he would have to search far

He travelled round the world on many boats and then a train

But he hadn't any luck until, while stepping off a plane

What he saw at Luton Airport made his heart beat very fast

Could this be the very soul-mate for our Hoomi at last

There stood a creature of a very pleasing size

She was tall, she was substantial, with enormous green eyes

So he drew a big breath and said "My dear, who might you be?"

And she turned to him, most sweetly smiled and said "Who, me/"

"A Hoomi!" cried out Hoomski "that's the very perfect one

Marry me and come to my land, there to share my throne"

Now it happened that this lady rather liked our hero's pun

And she thought that Hoomski might be really rather fun

SO

They flew through God.s heaven

In a 747

And landed at sunset, ja?

Now thanks to "Who, me?"

(Whose name was Marie)

Our Hoomski's a Hoom-pa-pa

The Flora Lora

A Flora Lora in a pot

Was a present that I got

This rare and much endangered plant

Was given to me by my aunt

Two weeks later, what a sight

Lora's grown a lot in height

Stretching, curling round my things

Lora's spreading out in rings

Taking over my best room

Which once was bright but now's all gloom

A pair of shears will put things right

I prune her back, let in some light

Much satisfied, I close my eyes

Well pleased with Lora's new slim size

But sulking Lora's growth that night

Increases to the speed of light

By morning she's too big to fit

My house, and bursting out of it

Out into every crack or space

Her leaves and babies grow apace

The house fills with her family

There isn't any room for me

I cannot stand it any more

I want my house back as before

This horrid plant will have to go

Now whether you agree or no

A noxious substance  I require

To make sure this plant will expire

The worstest poison I could get

School dinners in her pot I set

And now to put it quite succinct

The Flora Lora is EXTINCT

Re: The Owl and the Pussycat

Posted: 20 Aug 2009 22:34

Long ago there was a tale
Told to me as a child
That the Owl and the Pussycat went to sea,
But I always thought that was wild.

This story takes place much later in life
When they all had much more sense
And lived on a farm in the Yorkshire Dales
Walled in by a lovely stone fence.

And so the tale unfolds in the twenty-first century....

The Owl and Pusscat watched all night
by the light of the silvery moon,
to see if all the critturs they liked
might venture out in the gloom.

The owl sang to his heart’s content
As he watched the fields for prey
And to his wife he did comment
on the seeds that fell through the day.

“We do not eat seeds or nuts”said he,
“but a tasty mouse would do.
I wonder how we could tempt enough out
to provide a meal for two?”

“We don’t like alfalfa or broccoli sprouts
and tofu is not to our taste,
But give us a mouse or even two mice
And we’ll see that nowt goes to waste!”

And Pusscat sang, “Will there be some for me?
Will any come scurrying past?
I not into seeds or nuts myself.
As for tofu - I’d rather fast.”

And pretty soon, by the light of the moon,
The mice came out to play.
Alas and alack!  They were made into snacks,
As night slowly turned back to day.

The moral of this tale is plain to see:
For all creatures great and small
There’s food enough to feed each one...
...And you don’t have to eat broccoli or tofu if you don’t want to!

Apologies for the tight spacing on this, and the slip in the third last stanza.  What Pusscat really sang was "I'm not into

seeds or nuts myself..."  I couldn'' resist after the conversation about mice and Pusscat and after hearing Mr. Hoots and

his companion talking about what's for dinner..
